Animation

An animation project for my senior seminar class, titled "Assimilation." I was interested in tackling the complex issues that surround food and its relation to Asian-American identity. Specifically, I wanted to reflect on my own experiences (and a shared experience amongst my Asian-American friends) of desperately trying to assimilate as a child into American society. I represented this through animations of foods from my culture which at first appear to be "American."

Assimilation

I wanted the overall composition of the animations together to represent a kind of bento/school lunch tray itself. From top to bottom and left to right, the contents include: a Lunchables tray which reveals a bento box, a milk carton which turns out to be tea, forks which turn into chopsticks, and a yogurt cup which holds miso soup. These animations all have outwardly appearances of things I used or wanted to use to assimilate into American culture, but also represent how I have learned to embrace my own culture.
